Steloy Castings looks ahead to its next era

Founded in 1984 by Danie Slabbert, Steloy Castings has revolutionized despite trying market conditions and is currently positioned as one of the leading foundries in South Africa. During its early years, Steloy Castings began as a foundry supplying pump and valve parts in steel and stainless steel and soon expanded its services to encompass a number of different sectors.

Since its inception Steloy Castings have enjoyed support from customers in a range of industries including:

  • Pump and valve sector
  • Petro-chemical sector
  • Rail engineering sector
  • The glass mould industry
  • The cement industry
  • The steel industry
  • The ferro-alloy industry

Meeting the demands of these industries is a challenge that Steloy has accepted in their stride and continues to not only meet the demands, but in most cases, exceed expectations. With three manufacturing facilities based in Bronkhorspruit and Krugersdorp, this world-class foundry has developed core competencies in a number of sectors and are in a position to supply customers with the following:

  • Corrosion, heat resistant and abrasion resistant alloys
  • High integrity castings
  • High quality iron and steel castings for the railway engineering industry
  • Technically and metallurgically challenging products

In addition, Steloy is able to produce and supply finished machined, accurately measured parts for the railway industry as well as a complete engineering service from drawing to final components.

“At Steloy Castings we place significant emphasis on ensuring our operations are compliant with industry standards and are accredited in accordance with the various industries in which we operate,” explains Steloy Castings CEO Danie Slabbert.

Looking specifically at accreditations, in June 2015, Steloy became the first Southern African foundry to receive IRIS (International Railway Industry Standards) accreditation, in addition to the following certificates:

  • ISO 9001
  • ISO 14000
  • OSHAS 18000
  • PED: Pressure Equipment Directive
  • IRIS: International Railway Industry Standards

Having these accreditations in place is critical to ensure that as a leading foundry, our product and service levels are of superior quality and provide a sustainable solution to our loyal customer base.

Operating in an industry which is fast losing momentum and skilled employees, Steloy Castings is committed to developing skills and positively contributing to the industry through the merSETA accredited training and test centre which offers qualifications in chemically bonded sand moulding and pattern making to Steloy staff as well as the industry at large.

2015 marked 30 years of service excellence for this world-class foundry. Steloy celebrated this milestone achievement with a business breakfast attended by loyal customers, industry bodies, as well as media. Furthermore, Steloy embarked on a competition inviting University of Johannesburg, 3rd year metallurgy students specialising in foundry studies, to submit an essay outlining the urgent measure that need to be taken to revitalise the foundry industry.

Following a rigorous judging procedure, University of Johannesburg student Thandi Mnyakeni was selected as the winner of a 1 year internship at Steloy Castings.

According to Danie, customers looking to buy and use casting products apply a stringent criteria when selecting a foundry supplier or partner. The criteria is essential to pay the best possible price for the highest quality casting in a highly pressurized environment.

He further adds, Steloy Castings, as a foundry supplier, respects the criteria laid out by our customers and potential customers. Our challenge which we have met and will continue to meet is to be a sustainable supplier, to maintain quality and service over the long-term and to remain a trusted and preferred supplier of quality products at the lowest possible.”
